AUSTRALIA

Australia - the land of contrast

A journey around Australia is a journey full of photographic opportunities.  Whatever your interests there is plenty of material.  Maybe you like historic buildings – think Sydney or Tasmania for instance.  Vast open spaces and Red Dust may take you to the Red Centre, or birds and wildlife to Queensland.  Australia is a HUGE country and it takes a long time to travel around by road, but so worthwhile if you have the time.  Some of it may be “same same” but this is where you will find the less seen sights – and the most amazing.  Take the time if you can and keep your eyes open and your mind active.

PHOTOGRAPHIC SUGGESTIONS

Light is important in Australia as it can be so bright as to wash out photographs – or foggy, wet, windy and any combination.  Check the conditions, decide what you are shooting and work out the best time.  Like most places that is usually early morning or late afternoon, but in very bright areas this time period is much shorter than in the more southerly places in winter for instance.

Another thing to think of is the crowds – tour groups are generally not very early so if you get to the area you want before them you have a good chance of taking that shot without people in the way (if that is what you want to do).

With wildlife and birds, read up on their habits, that way you have an idea on what to look for and where and when to do so.  Keep you eyes out when driving as some of the best opportunities can be wildlife on or beside the road –  if you see it and stop before disturbing it.

Keep an eye on those settings,  Shooting into dark treed areas will be in stark contrast to that scenic shot in full sunlight.

Get close, do not try to get the entire landscape in – that rarely works, find a focal point and hone in on it.  Less is more.
