African Safari

An African safari is the best way to travel to see amazing wildlife and birds. This gives fantastic photographic opportunities, including landscape and portrait.  There are over 1100 species of mammals and over 2600 species of birds.  For the reptile enthusiast there are over 350 species recorded throughout Africa. Four of the 5 fastest animals live in Africa which can make for great action shots. The scenes and wildlife found on an African Safari are unique which gives rise to all sorts of creative or realist photographic opportunities.

PHOTOGRAPHIC SUGGESTIONS

Spend some time and check out the light to ensure that you get the best possible photograph.  Light is key to successful pictures and in the main dawn and dusk are the preferred times.  This time of day is not only for light but also as is when wildlife and birds are most active. Think about alternative perspective opportunities, maybe a balloon flight, or a walk with the wildlife. There are a couple of places you can do this, see our blog. Outside of wildlife there are many opportunities on the coast and underwater.  Africa has some good coral reefs (although these like many places are reducing and under threat).  Try out some photography underwater with a housing for your usual camera or an underwater point and shoot. Take guides in the National Parks – they are the best way to spot things you would never manage alone (like owls for instance).  The cost is small and the reward is well worth while.  Once you have been shown where things are, you can go back in your own time to perfect the pictures. There are many countries to chose from in Africa and unless you have unlimited time (and money) do your research well. Make sure you go to the best country or two for your specific interests.  Research the time of year for the wildlife and birds you most want to see to get maximum results.
