Safety: India is generally safe for tourists, although petty crimes do exist, violent crimes are rare.  Traffic in large cities is heavy.  Trains are generally safe to travel on.

TRANSPORT:

Flights  – many small airlines ply from city to city but they are not particularly cheap.  Trains are good and cheap – but slow.

Planning

Weather is diverse accross the country, ranging from high mountains, cold and snow to lovely warm beaches.  Check specific areas and times of year before travel.  Most travellers will need clothes for both warm and cold climates on a journey to India

Many layers plus a few warm and waterproof items.

Basic Double Beds with air cond from 2500 INR
Mid range and up Double from 4000 INR
 

Food:-
Stalls – from 100 INR
Local restaurants from 200 INR
Resort or similar from 400 INR

Transport:-
Train – Costs are cheap, 1st class down to 3rd class – distances are huge, so great value if you have the time.
Car hire – not advised to drive yourself, Use buses and trains where possible, flights and taxi’s if not.
Taxi – example of 70km journey taking 2 hours around 2700 INR
